Spring is only a few days away which means it's time to get back to work at Visalli Family Farms! We've been hard at work preparing for our upcoming season. This year we will open on Thursday, April 9th. Today, my dad (Mike Sr.) and I started planting our flower and vegetable seeds in the greenhouse, so I thought I'd share the seeding process.
We plant the seeds in our “seed house”. Unlike an average greenhouse, the seed house has glass which helps keep it warmer to help the seeds grow. We begin by filling trays with soil and leveling them off. Then, we make rows in the soil to sprinkle the seed into. The next step is to spread the seed; we try to spread the seeds evenly throughout the tray. We plant approximately 250 seeds in each tray. Seeds come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. After that, we cover the trays up with a little more soil and level them off again. Finally, we water all the trays.
The greenhouse will stay heated to around 80°F (27°C) to help the seeds grow, and the trays will be watered regularly. In a few weeks the plants will be big enough to transplant into the trays you see at the market. Some of those trays will be available at the market for your garden and some of them will be later planted in our fields!
